The Environmental Dilemma of Fast Fashion: Can AI Solve It?
By 吉茄
Over 100 billion garments are produced yearly, creating 92 million tonnes of textile waste—most worn only 7–10 times. Can AI virtual try-on and digital sampling help cut this waste?

How Does Fast Fashion Intensify Resource Waste?
Globally, more than 100 billion garments are produced each year, yet they generate approximately 92 million tonnes of textile waste.[1] Many clothes are worn an average of only 7 to 10 times before being discarded, resulting in severe resource waste.[2]

Fashion e-commerce return rates remain persistently high, ranging from 20% to 40%, with some categories reaching as high as 46%.[3][4]
Physical sampling, model shoots, and inventory overstock further exacerbate the waste.
Can AI Effectively Reduce This Kind of Waste?
Virtual try-on and 3D digital sampling technologies can help manufacturers reduce the production of physical sample garments.

Accurate virtual try-on previews enable consumers to better assess fit and style, effectively lowering return rates. After Zalando introduced virtual try-on, it reduced return rates by more than 40%.[5]
For brands and designers, quickly converting flat garment sketches into realistic multi-angle photographs not only saves time and cost but also reduces resource consumption.

Tools like Mannequ.io, for example, use AI to transform a single clothing photo into professional fashion photography images. By presenting garments digitally, they help cut down on waste.
AI is not a silver bullet, but if we make good use of technology, we may be able to pursue fashion while also making the planet a better place.
